Ambroxan is a synthetic fragrance with a unique aroma of natural ambergol, and is recognized as one of the best substitutes for natural ambergol. It is one of the most critical trace components of natural ambergol tincture. Ambergris is a precious animal spice that is a stone in the intestines and stomach of sperm whales. It is vomited or excreted by whales on the sea surface and emits a special aroma over time in the air. The synthesis of Ligusticum odoratum is based on perilla alcohol and undergoes two-step oxidation with KMnO4 (ozone oxidation in Switzerland and sodium chromate oxidation in Russia). Namely, (1) alkaline oxidation; (2) Weakly acidic oxidation. Obtaining oxides, then soaping, dehydrating, and lactonizing the oxides results in the production of salivary lactone. Reduce lactone with lithium aluminum hydride in (or borane in tetrahydrofuran) to norsalinediol. Using D-camphor- β- Sulfonic acid is used as a cyclizing agent to cyclize diol, resulting in the synthesis of norethinyl  (foreign cyclizing agents include sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and β- Naphthalenesulfonic acid, etc.). The total yield of the entire process is 35%.

Therefore, replacing ambroxan with synthetic raw materials is a very necessary thing. The perfume industry has also made many achievements in the research and development of ambergris substitutes. There is no single raw material that can restore the complex and layered scent of natural ambergris.
